INSURANCE Questions & Answers

Q. Help me select a collision repair shop - what should I do?

A. Do the same things you do to select a Doctor. Ask friends for recommendations and visit area shops to get a feel for their operation. Is the shop clean and well maintained? Do the workers seem to take pride in their work and their workspace? Ask about the shop's structural repair and measuring equipment. Automobile specifications can have very fine tolerances and without the right equipment your car could be less than your expectation and not correctly restored. Be sure to ask if any estimates you receive comply with your manufactures' and I-CAR recommendations.

Q. If repairs are to be paid for by insurance, who takes care of it?

A. You pay for the insurance and you benefit from it, so you should be involved in the claims adjusting process from start to finish. Periodically review your insurance company's procedure for claims settlement with a sharp eye to what your rights and responsibilities are. The time to learn about your coverage is before a claim arises. The better informed you are, the more value you will derive from your insurance. If you are not sure about any part of the process, ask an attorney or other neutral party to explain it.

Q. Where can I find more information about automobile insurance?

A. Most of what you need to know is covered in the "Florida Motor Vehicle Automobile Repair Act." Most of the better insurance agents or attorney should also be able to help.

Q. Fraud?

A. Yes. Any submission of false, misleading or incomplete information during the insurance process is insurance fraud. From your initial application to statements regarding accidents, failure to tell the truth can come back to haunt you. Your policy could be voided at the time of an accident, or at any time it can be proved that you deliberately withheld pertinent information in your insurance application or in a claim.
